Part Two - Rwanda

Page Three - Golden Monkey Trek and Rushubi Primary School

Farm land seen on our way to start the golden monkey trek.

Area where we started the golden monkey trek.

The day after the difficult trek to see mountain gorillas, we did a shorter trek over similar terrain to see golden monkeys,
who are also endangered. We again walked first through farm land. Note the colorful outfit
this woman working in the field has on. Women wear beautiful and colorful outfits like this.
Farming is done by hand.

Golden monkey. They live in troops or groups and are very active,
swinging from tree to tree or from one bamboo branch to another, using extra long tails for balance.
We didn't have to trek as far into the forest to see the golden monkeys as we did to see the mountain gorillas.
We had to wear masks to protect the monkeys from human diseases.

Golden monkey eating

Me with the female porter that I had for the golden monkey trek. Like my male porter for the gorilla trek,
she was able to literally lift me over some of the slippery and muddy terrain.
This photo was taken as we were coming out of the forest on to farm land.

At Rushubi Primary School, a public school supported by Grand Circle Foundation, parent company of Overseas Adventure Travel.

The head teacher talking to us at the school, which is operated by the government and offers free education
to more than 800 students from the surrounding area. Grand Circle purchased bicycles for all of the teachers
so they didn't have to walk to and from the school to work every day from their homes.

The children sang and danced for us. Their energy, joy, and enthusiasm was contagious

We danced with the kids after they sang and danced for us.

The tour group, with some of the children and staff. Our main tour guide, Isaac, is kneeling in the front.

Staff at the Ingagi Park View Lodge saying goodbye to us as we were leaving to drive back to Kigali to fly home.

Typical roadside scene.
