Part Three - Estonia
Page Three - Kadriorg Park
A short distance east of Old Town is Kadriorg Park, which
we took a local tram to get to. It is a favorite gathering place
for residents of Talinn to stroll, play, and picnic. We saw lots of
families in the park. Here are the pond and garden areas, which
were one time part of the grounds
of Kadriorg Palace.
Swans and ducks in the pond.
Two friends sitting and talking on a park bench
in Kadriorg Park.
Fall colors in the Park
Kadriorg Palace, now an Art Museum.
The Palace was built between 1718 and 1736
by Russian Czar Peter for his wife Catherine I soon
after his conquest of Estonia. Kadriorg means Catherine's
Valley in Estonian.
Three elderly women walking near the Palace
French style flower garden behind Kadriorg Palace.
A broader view of the Palace and garden
Office and home of the Estonian President.
It was built in 1938 during a previous period of independence
as the home of the President, and became so again after
re-independence in the 1990s.
Notice that our tour group is standing very near the Office
with no sign of any security forces around the building.
Only 2 honor guards standing near the front entrance
appeared to be protecting the Presidential
home and office.
Locals coming to visit the KUMU, a modern art museum
located on the edge of Kadriorg Park, featuring leading artists
in Estonian art and sculpture from the 18th century to
present day.
Here is a painting in the KUMU done in 1952. It is entitled
"Fear." It depicts the fear Estonians had of KGB suddenly
showing up at their homes to deport them to Siberia.

More fall color in the Park
A family enjoying the pond and the Park. The kids
were feeding the ducks.
Small child with protective helmet on a bike with
training wheels in the Park.
Part of modern Talinn, near our hotel.
View of the City, with the overcast sky that is so common in the Baltics.
Narrow cobblestoned street in Old Town where we
wandered when we had free time.
Another mannequin in front of a store. You can
probably figure out the kind of things this store
is selling.
Bronze Age era graves where people were put into
stone-lined tombs. We saw these in the countryside after
leaving Talinn and heading by bus for
St. Petersburg, Russia.
