Aswan High Dam completed in 1971.
It created the largest artificial lake in the world,
Lake Nasser, that stretches 310 miles.

Great Temple at Abu Simbel. Abu Simbel
lies almost on the border with Sudan. It's a majestic
monument built by the most powerful pharaoh, Ramses II.
Though dedicated to 3 specific gods, it was actually erected
for the eternal glorification of Ramses II. There is another
temple next to this one dedicated to his favorite wife Nefertari.
A massive international project was undertaken to relocate it
to higher ground by UNESCO after the High Dam was built, and
it would have been buried by water. The U.S. paid 1/3 of the cost.
Abu Simbel temple is sculpted into the mountain.
The facade is about 101 feet high and almost 125
feet wide. Four giant statues of Ramses II are outside.
The headless one lost his head in an earthquake. The
statues are about 66 feet high.
Smaller figures representing members of the royal
family are beside and between the legs of the
Ramses II statues.
