Hiking Eastern Greenland and Iceland's Westfjords - Wilderness Travel tour
July 1-13, 2022
Part Two - Western Iceland
Page Three - Isafjordur

View from helicopter as we were leaving Tasiilaq for the 10 minute
flight to Kulusuk, Greenland to catch another flight to Reykjavik, Iceland

In Reykjavik. While waiting to catch flight to western Iceland,
we went to Perlan for lunch. Perlan is a museum and a rotating
glass dome. You can do a circular walk outside on its top level to
get views of Reykjavik. This view shows Hallgrimskirkja Church, a
Lutheran (Church of Iceland) church. It's the largest church in Iceland
at 244 feet tall. It was completed in 1986.

On a first hike in western Iceland after flying to Isafjordur in western
Iceland. We hiked up to a mountain pass.

Sheep seen on the trail. Farmers let their sheep run wild in the summer. They
round them up in the fall and cull out the sheep they own by finding their tags
on the sheep.

Ptarmigan just off the trail

Iceland has so many waterfalls.

We saw lots of pretty moss like this.

Beautiful fjord seen from the pass

The following day we hike to the top of Myrarfell mountain, with views overlooking the fjord.
As you can see, it was overcast, but we had little rain.

Later in the day, we took a short hike to this waterfall, Dynjandi.

We saw quite a few Arctic terns in an area where we stopped to soak in
geothermal waters. Arctic terns migrate annually from Antarctica.

The parents aggressively protect their nesting young.
The terns will attack anyone getting too close.
One of our tour participants found this to be true (didn't get hurt).
I imagined a scene from Hitchcock's "The Birds."

We spent 2 nights at an isolated location along a beach
called Hotel Breidavik.
